Allen Carr: Misrepresented Genius or Master Strategist? An article by Dr Ivings

Wednesday, December 13, 2006

Allen Carr, self professed smoking expert, and thorn in the side of the medical establishment died this week at the age of 72. He was yet another victim to the cruel disease that he claims to have spared millions from.
Carr died apparently bitter about his perceived rejection by the Government and Health Service. He recently wrote in an open letter to Tony Blair, “In spite of repeated formal approaches throughout 2004, 2005, & 2006, your Government, Department of Health, NHS, ASH, and QUIT have all have refused to even meet me – let alone show an interest in my method.”

Want to Quit? Head for the Pub

Friday, January 5, 2007

January is the biggest month of the year for quitting smoking. This year, help has arrived in the unlikely form of your local pub.

J D Wetherspoon has joined together with smoking expert, Dr Kristina Ivings, to help smokers stick to their New Year’s Resolutions.

Jokey beer mats will be handed out with the beer featuring Dr Ivings’ cartoon pest ‘Nitch (or Nicotine Itch) who is the infuriating imp who sits inside smokers nagging them to smoke again, and again. Details on how to beat Nitch once and for all are on the back of the beer-mat.

Using Nitch is a fun way to get the message across – a radical departure from the health focused information usually on offer. Dr. Ivings, author of Free Yourself From Smoking, said “smokers are used to people trying to tell them to stop. And they have become masters at ignoring health information. The last thing smokers want is to be lectured when they are trying to relax with a pint.  Nitch is different, because he helps people see smoking in a different way and this makes it easier for people to give it up with a sense of relief not a sense of doom.”

As for the pubs, helping smokers enjoy  a pint without the need for a smoke is an excellent way of keeping their custom after the smoking ban comes in later this year. Wetherspoon staff are hoping that the scheme can help their profits stay as healthy as their customers.

Do you recommend use of nicotine replacement products?

Wednesday, December 13, 2006

Yes the research is very clear on this. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) doubles your chance of success. You may be able to get NRT free from your doctor. However NRT is only 1 small part of the problem - you also need to tackle psychological dependence and habit, so don’t depend on patches alone.
